A changeling is a creature from European folklore, believed to be a fairy or troll child left in place of a human infant stolen by supernatural beings. They often appeared sickly or behaved differently, and the legend was historically used to explain illness or developmental differences in children.
Children considered “Changelings” were often abandoned in the forest or inside a hollow tree, in hopes the fae folk would return the human child in exchange.
